Here, a World Heritage enthusiast explains in an easy-to-understand way why Telč is a World Heritage Site in this issue. Read this and you will definitely learn more about Telč!
What is Telč?
The Moravian region is located near the border with Austria, and Telč is a town included in the province of Visocina. The origin of Telč is unknown, and records of the town date from the first half of the 14th century, with its heyday around the 16th century, when Zaharias Hradec became mayor.
The town consists mainly of a castle built during the Renaissance, and the Zahariash Square in the center of town is lined with colorful Renaissance and early Baroque houses. And on the square is the Monument to the Virgin Mary, which was built by the wealthy residents of the town.
Originally, although there was a regulation that the buildings around the square were to be built only in the Renaissance and early Baroque styles, landlords had the right to renovate them at will to some extent, and some houses with Rococo style decorations can be seen.
Although people tend to focus only on the beautiful facades, the town also functions wonderfully as a town. The town experienced a fire in the 14th century, so two large reservoirs were built around the town and a fire protection system is in place in case of emergencies.
For what reason is Telč on the World Heritage List?
Telch was recognized for the following
Registration Criteria (i)
The fact that the collaboration of art and architectural techniques can be seen, such as the Renaissance-style building with a stunning façade in Zahariash Square.
Registration Criteria (iv)
Although there were several towns in the surrounding area that were established in the late Middle Ages by clearing forests, Telč is one of the best-preserved of them all.
World Heritage Mania Conclusions and Impressions
Telč is symbolized by the colorful houses on Zahariash Square, a true work of art. However, Telč is, after all, a town that was built by unpacking a forest. Another point of appreciation is the various efforts made to keep the residents living in the area, such as rebuilding the houses with stone structures and building a reservoir around the town so that they would not be troubled in case of fire.
