Lviv is located in western Ukraine, near the Polish border. The origin of the town is not clear, but a settlement existed here in the 5th-6th centuries. Later, in the 13th century, it became the capital of the Grand Duchy of Galicia–Volhynia, but in the 14th century it became a Polish possession. At that time Lviv became an administrative, religious, and commercial center until the 17th century.

However, the town was destroyed in the 18th century, and with the partition of Poland in 1772, it became part of the Austrian Empire from now on.Then, after World War I, it was handed over to Poland, then to the Soviet Union in 1939, and finally to Ukraine.

Therefore, the remaining buildings in the town today are influenced by Italian and German architectural styles, combined with the unique architectural styles of Eastern Europe. The two areas on the World Heritage List are the central area, which includes the ruins of the castle and Baroque architecture around Rynok Square and St. Eula’s Hill to the southwest.

The old town of Lviv is an area so old that its existence is known from around the 5th century. A castle was built on top of the hill, and the surrounding area was expanded with squares and streets between the 13th and 17th centuries. Because the rulers changed many times, the old town is also characterized by the construction of various religious facilities, including mosques, synagogues, Catholic churches, and Armenian Orthodox churches.

The city center still retains its unique Eastern European townscape, with Renaissance and Baroque monasteries and residences built since the 14th century. In particular, the Cathedral of St. Eula in the southwestern part of the city is a beautiful Baroque-style building.

Heritage in Crisis (Heritage Sites in Danger)

The city has been registered as a heritage site in crisis since 2023, as the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has made the city a target of attack.

World Heritage Mania Conclusions and Thoughts

Lviv was once ruled by many countries, including Poland, Austria, and Russia, so its architecture is influenced by Renaissance and Baroque styles, making it hard to believe that it is a town in Eastern Europe .And because it was a multi-ethnic town, it is also valued for its various religious institutions and the fact that many ethnic groups continue to live there today.

For some reason, many Lviv citizens are coffee drinkers, and the number of cafes is the largest in Ukraine. There are many fashionable open cafes, but some of them are unique cafes called “cave cafes.
